Since December 2021 the Category B+E test has no longer been a requirement to tow trailers up to 3,500 kg.
The change allowed the DVSA to address the shortage of HGV drivers by providing more availability for HGV tests.
All Category B holders now have category B+E entitlement on their Licence.
With a standard Category B (car licence), you are permitted to drive vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes MAM (maximum authorised mass) with up to 8 passenger seats. The B+E category expands your driving capabilities, allowing you to tow up to a combined towing weight of 7 tonnes. However, the MAM of your trailer must not exceed the MAM of the towing vehicle.
Drivers who passed their test before January 1, 1997, are typically grandfathered with a B+E licence and can continue to tow trailers until their licence expires.
Advantages of holding a B+E Licence
Having a Category B+E licence offers flexibility similar to what vans provide but with the added benefits of detachability, often without extra insurance premiums or road tax. This licence is particularly advantageous for towing trailers, caravans, horseboxes etc.
Practical training is still available!
We offer comprehensive B+E towing training as you might have experienced when taking a course for preparing to take a B+E test.
As no test is now required, our experienced trainer can offer useful guidance on safe handling of a trailer or horsebox etc, ensuring you stay within the law, and maintain safe practices when towing.
We also offer the opportunities to practice those unusual reverse manoeuvres that are unique to your situation, so you can feel confident when faced with a challenging parking spot or driveway.

You are also welcome to bring your own towing set up for that familiar feel and the chance to really put your rig in all those, once before no-go places!
Courses are on a 1 session basis, and are often on a 121 basis, and charged at a day rate.
We do offer a clinic style courses on a 2-2-1 system that is organised by our partners at the British Horse Society for those in need of guidance in towing their pride and joy safely.

A relaxed program taking 5.5 hours over 1 day. No additional forms, or medical is required to take this training session. The course is designed to develop fundamental skills when towing commercial or private trailers, horseboxes or caravans. Learning safe practices for coupling, reverse manoeuvres and safety checks. All on and off road training is aimed towards the nation driving standards as found at test level.
