What is the difference between Class 1 licence and LGV training?
Often, we are asked about the difference between LGV and HGV. Here’s a quick clarification:
- HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) and LGV (Large Goods Vehicle) refer to the same licence. The term HGV is historical but is still widely used.
- LGV C+E (HGV Class 1) – Allows driving vehicles up to 44 tonnes.
- LGV C (HGV Class 2) – Permits driving vehicles up to 32 tonnes.
- LGV C1 – For vehicles over 3.5 up to 7.5 tonnes (C1+E with trailer).
Passing your Cat C or C+E training and test grants you automatic entitlement to C1 and C1+E respectively. Candidates over 18 can apply and take their LGV tests and initial CPC vocational training.
How to start your HGV driving training
- Check if you have the provisional entitlement on your licence to drive a lorry via the GOV.UK licence check portal.
- Ensure you have completed a medical and submitted your application forms along with your driving licence to the DVLA, we can assist in this process.
- Not sure about your entitlements?
- If you lack provisional entitlement, we'll need to help arrange your D2 and D4 forms, and book a medical before you can start your HGV training for your C+E licence.

What does my LGV training package include?
Your training for the C+E licence HGV includes:

An immersive and thorough 28-hour training program spread over 7 days, for the absolute novice LGV driver with no large vehicle experience. The module 3a and 3b tests will be delivered by the DVSA part way and on the final day of the course. The course package includes assistance with all required documentation and appointment booking, theory learning material and the off road and on road training, and practical DVSA test fees.
Course fee includes:
- Medical examination (D4) and D2 form if required.

CPC modules 2 and 4 can be included in your package as required. This section of the course prepares you for both the theoretical and practical components of the professional driving tests.
